Septic Repair Program

Since 2006, Haywoood Waterways has managed, in partnership with the Haywood County Environmental Health Deparment, the Septic Repair Program, providing funding to repair or replace a failing septic system that will impact adjacent waterways. We have replaced 206septic systems to date, avoiding over 70,000 gal/day of wastewater into our waterways.

Program Overview

Grant and Homeowner Funded

Each year we secure foundation, state, and federal grants to fund septic repair or replacement for our county citizens. Each grant typically funds 75% of total project cost and the homeowner covers the remaining 25% cost.

Project Timeline

HWA and HCEHD work throughout the year to identify, prioritize, and complete numerous septic repairs and replacements. Contact HCEHD to begin the process, which begins as a site visit and possible determination of a failure. Instructions are provided to obtain three estimates from local contractors. HWA confirms bids and permitting are in place with both HCEHD and contractor and work begins.

Applicable Projects

All projects must be near a waterway to remove the impact the failing system is causing to our local waterways. Haywood County Environmental Health Department assists in determining whether the system is failing and HWA confirms its proximity to water.

Funding Partners

Funding for this program is made possible through the Pigeon River Fund, NC DEQ grants, and institutional grants supporting Haywood County. Our program partners provide expertise and oversight in the installation and inspection processes, ensuring a fully functional system for decades to come.
