Spotlight on Silver Shiners The silver shiner is fairly widespread though out the Ohio and Tennessee River basin and can be found locally abundant in some areas. In North Carolina the silver shiner is only found in Western North Carolina. An adult silver shiner can grow to 149 millimeters in length and feed on insects at the surface of the water. This species has been observed leaping out of the water in pursuit of flying insects. Silver shiners are mostly found in medium to large streams with medium to high gradient. The preferred habitat for this species is boulder, cobble, pebbles, and in a limited amount silt. Researchers have determined silver shiners avoid areas with high vegetation and siltation. For the most part this species can handle mild to moderate human impacts. The silver shiner has been the most successful reintroduced species having increased its range beyond the reintroduction efforts.
