HWA Receives Three Grants From The Pigeon River Fund

Haywood Waterways Association received three grants, totaling $36,000, from the Pigeon River Fund during the 1999 Fall Cycle.

We received $20,000 for administrative and operating expenses for the year 2000. These funds, along with our cash carryover, will fund us through much of the new year. Our Year 2000 operating budget projects $4,245 in donations and contributions, so please remember HWA in your budget. Encourage your friends to join HWA and remember HWA memberships make great gifts.

Our $6,300 award for the Volunteer Water Information Network (VWIN) program will fund the current sampling sites for 12 months. We will expand the program this year with additional sites and flow studies. Watch for more information about VWIN and the Watershed Action Plan in future newsletters.

The third grant, in the amount of $9,700, will enable us to expand our educational programs and establish an Internet site. We will offer $300 mini-grants to all 15 Haywood County Schools for water quality education projects and/or related equipment purchases. We are also working with the Waynesville Recreation Department to start a summer youth program at their new facility on Richland Creek. This new program includes funding for two part-time teachers and an assistant. The HWA Board of Directors wishes to extend its sincerest thanks to the Pigeon River Fund for their continued support of HWA and water quality improvement in Haywood County.
